I’ve noticed an interesting demand trend in the industry regarding competition for event and meeting business at venues. It’s become very clear that the demand is growing. Most lower and middle tier venues are looking to push their inventory (increase space utilization), but struggle with how to do it cost effectively against the higher tier venues. There is also a small segment of the market(high end) that is quite content with all the business they get and aren’t looking for new competition. Event and Meeting Planners are struggling with challenges associated with a lack of transparency on pricing and availability.
In a recent listening lab with Pogby and professional planners, the frustration was clear – Why is getting basic information(availability and pricing) from a venue so difficult? Most professional planners aren’t interested in seeing a flurry of menu options, they want to understand immediately if the venue is in their range. Planners will lean to venues that give them what they need…rapidly. On the other hand, venues want planners to commit. Requesting a Hold is not the most effective way for venues to do business – venues are looking for a commitment.
Venues have been cutting prices to gain attention and compete with the “Big Guys.” CityView Racquet Club, in Long Island City, Queens, just cut their flat fee rental rates by 75%. Quite impressive for an incredible facility with postcard view of Manhattan and a fireplace that spins its flames in a circular motion(unbelievable to be honest) in the main bar area.
A majority of the venue market is seeking lower cost methods(incentive models) to sell their services. An approach where both parties win…hence, Pogby. Fortunately, the majority of both planners and venues are on the same page. Change in this industry is absolutely needed in order to create a fair playing field for all participants (planners, suppliers, venues, etc). The message is loud (getting louder) and clear.

CityView is one of my favorite venues. It not only has tennis courts,
squash ball and a gym, but it also has an incredible rooftop deck and
bar for your event! CityView accommodates all types of events. In
particular, they have a Birthday Party Package that includes tennis,
training with a tennis pro, pizza and a personalized cake. This
specific package can accommodate between 4 and 50 people and is
available daily. Other packages include a Tennis Social that includes
tennis time, open bar and appetizers from $150/per person, Flat Fee
Rental of the Roof Deck (that oversees all of Manhattan – quite
possible the best view from Queens) from $2,000, and they also allow
the rental of the entire facility.
The event planning group at CityView is amazing as well. They will
